  • Thomas, age 6, acute Lymphoid leukemia, I wish to meet my favorite cartoon character.

Thomas is like any other kid his age – he loves reading books, building trains, and enjoying a bowl of macaroni and cheese. Though unlike his peers, six-year-old Thomas is battling a cancer of the blood and bone marrow called acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

Enduring rounds of chemo and traveling in-and-out of the hospital, Thomas is one tough kid. For his Make-A-Wish® experience, Thomas took his love for trains and wished to meet his favorite train cartoon character!

Thomas and his family drove from Madras all the way to Seattle where this wish began. After exploring the city and enjoying a nice dinner at the Space Needle, they anxiously awaited for the next morning when Thomas's wish would be granted. Waking up to a surprise limousine ride, Thomas and his family arrived at the railroad in style and enjoyed a day full of smiles and laughter.

Because of Adopt-A-Wish® partners this holiday season, we are able to grant wishes like Thomas’ to courageous kiddos battling very grown up illnesses. Thank you to Les Schwab for supporting Make-A-Wish Oregon and helping us bring Thomas and his family joy at a time when they need it most.

  • Amanda, age 15, Fredrich's Ataxia, I wish to go to Hawaii.

Fifteen-year-old Amanda suffers from Friedreich's Ataxia, a degenerative neuro-muscular disorder. When a child is this age, the biggest worry they should be facing is whether or not they are going to pass their driver’s license test. Instead, Amanda is battling for her life. When asked what Amanda wanted to wish for – anything in the world – she chose to spend a relaxing vacation in Hawaii with the people she loves most – her family.

Amanda and her family flew out of Portland International Airport and arrived in beautiful Kona, Hawaii. They spent time relaxing, enjoyed a special tour with Hawaiian Outdoor Guides, and visited different parks, gardens and beaches around the island.

Make-A-Wish Oregon would like to extend a sincere thank you to Safeway for partnering with us this holiday season and granting Amanda’s wish. It is because of supporters like Safeway that we are able to keep giving hope, strength and joy to the courageous children we serve.

  • Kaylin, age 7, Cardiomyopathy, I wish to have a concrete covered play area.

Kaylin is an energetic seven-year-old from Estacada, who has many siblings and a loving adoptive mother and grandmother. Kaylin has a heart condition, cardiomyopathy, which has resulted in a heart transplant. In addition to her heart condition, Kaylin wears prosthetics legs and is battling a number of other medical conditions.

When Kaylin was asked what she wanted for her Make-A-Wish® experience, she expressed her love for riding bikes and playing outside with her siblings. Taking these thing she loved, she wished to have her very own covered concrete play area. Make-A-Wish Oregon got to work and transformed a large section of Kaylin’s backyard into a covered play area. Complete with a new purple bike for Kaylin so her and her siblings can now play together and ride bikes rain or shine! Kaylin lights up, smiling ear to ear, when she gets on her new bike. You can tell by the twinkle in her eye that she could not be more excited to share this special wish with her family.

Kaylin’s wish is one that she gets to enjoy now and for years to come. It is a constant reminder for this seven-year-old to keep being a kid and having fun with her brothers and sisters; it provides her an escape from the harsh reality of her medical conditions. A huge thank you to Les Schwab for supporting Make-A-Wish Oregon this holiday season and making Kaylin’s wish come true.
